RE: 1998 KIA Sportage - over $ 1,000 for repairs - sudden accellerations and then the car will stall Re: Engine Light On: Stalls, Cuts off in traffic,1998 KIA Sportage

My Engine Light intermittantly stays constantly on. When it does, the car will stall out when first starting up. After getting it down the road a bit, it stay in a constantly accelerated mode with the engine idling so fast as if I had the gas pedal down to the floor.

It also will suddenly start accelerating while sitting at a light or at other waiting situations. In addition, it will surge and then stall while going down the freeway and sometime backfire as well. Needless to say, this is a definite accident waiting to happen. I have had my vehicle in the shop 7 times now at cost of over $1000 in repairs, parts, and service for this same on-going problem. They have replaced the P0100 MAF, IAS, and TPS sensors, re-soldered the entire engine

wiring harness and connectors, did a tuneup with valve adjustment and timing belt change, tested, cleaned, and tightened numerous connectors and sensor leads each time.

The shop Foreman Mark White, said that the connectors often come loose or become corroded on the 1998 Sportages, it was a known problem by KIA. However, it cost me $468 (as part of the over $1000) to get that done and the light goes off for a couple of days and then returns with the same dangerous symptoms again. The shop I've taken it to is Chuck Olson's Chevrolet-KIA, 17037 Aurora Ave. N., Shoreline, WA 98133. From the reading that I've done online, other models like the Sephia have had the same serious problems with lack of resolutions for the consumers that have filed complaints. I will try to file what complaints I can but it doesn't seem like there's a resolution to this situation as it's widespread among various KIA makes and models.

The alternative is to sell the vehicle. While I may take a beating on it, it's better to be alive than accelerate through a building like some of the incidents I've read about this. Please, for your own sake, don't buy a KIA! Sincerely, DJ Locke
