Geico - insurance cancelled due to second insured not getting US driver's license - upsetting experience

Complaints.com received the following consumer message on September 16, 2002:

RE: Geico - insurance cancelled due to second insured not getting US driver's license - upsetting experience I have been insured with Geico for the last 18 months.

I have had a cousin staying with me from the UK on and off, over several months and wanted them to be able to drive my car, so added them to my Geico insurance - which has been O.K. with Geico for the last 18 months.

Geico sent me a letter out of the blue, advising that they were teminating my insurance cover because my cousin had not succeeded in obtaining a U.S. driving licence - even though they never told me that this was a requirement. I contacted them several times, and they failed to return all of my phone calls.

When I eventually got hold of their underwriters, they said that my cousin had to obtain a U.S. driving licence, even if they did not want to drive my car any more, as all people in the household of driving age had to be listed on the insurance, regardless of their ability, or need to drive!

I have since moved house, and my cousin has returned to the U.K.

I contacted Geico to advise them. They asked if my cousin would be coming back to the U.S. As this is a possibility, Geico have REFUSED to insure me until my cousin - who may or may not come back to the U.S., and who may or may not visit me - has obtained a U.S. driving licence. What bulls**t is this?!!
