Complaints.com received the following consumer message on October 21, 2002:

I HAD A CHECKING ACCT WITH FIRST UNION BANK BACK IN 1999. I HAD TROUBLE WITH THEM AND WHEN THE IRS WRONGLY PUT A HOLD ON MY ACCT IT EVEN GOT WORSE. WHEN THE HOLD WAS ON MY ACCT THE TELLER LET ME DEPOSIT $14OO WHICH I HAD TO WRITE CHECK FOR AS WE WERE MOVING.

LATER THAT DAY I WENT TO USE MY ATM CARD AND IT WAS DENIED STATING NOT ENOUGH FUNDS. I WENT TO THE BANK AND TALKED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE BRANCH I HAD BEEN DEALING WITH. SHE STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING SHE COULD DO, SO I TOLD HER TO CLOSE THAT ACCT AND NOT TO ACCEPT ANY CHECKS. I HAD WRITTEN 4 CHECK AND THEY STILL HAD NOT GONE THRU MY BANK.

I PERSONALLY CONTACTED THESE PEOPLE AND PAID THEM PERSONALLY. THEY STATED THAT THE DEPOSITED THEM IN THEIR BANK. I INFORMED THEM THAT I HAD CLOSED THAT ACCT AND THAT MY BANK WOULD NOT ACCEPT ANY CHECK ON THIS ACCT. I AM NOW BEING ASKED TO PAY 301.47 FOR FEES.

I HAVE ASKED THEM TO SEND ME A STATEMENT SHOWING ME WHAT THE FEES ARE FOR AND THEY STATED THEY WILL NOT DO THAT. IT IS ON MY CREDIT REPORT AND NOW RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THEM STATING THEY ARE OFFERING ME TO PAY HALF THE AMT AND THEY WILL CONSIDER ACCT CLOSED AND WILL CONTACT THE CREDIT BUREAUS. I CALLED THEM AGAIN AND WAS TOLD ONCE AGAIN A STATEMENT WOULD NOT BE SENT, I ASKED IF HE COULD TELL ME WHAT THE FEE WERE FOR AND HE STATED THEY ARE JUST FEES.

I TOLD HIM I WROTE 4 CHECK AND PAID THE PEOPLE PERSONALLY, SO HOW COULD THEY GET 301.47 FOR 4 CHECKS. I ASKED HIM IF HE PAYS BILLS THAT HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE FOR AND HE STATED HE CANNOT HELP ME AND ASKED IF I WANTED TO PAY THE 150.74 AND GET MY ACCT CURRENT.

I TLD HIM I DO NOT PAY A BILL UNLESS I KNOW WHAT IT IS FOR. HE HUNG UP. THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH. I FEEL THAT THIS BANK IS WRONGLY CHARGING FEES TO ME AND WILL NOT SEND ME A STATEMENT SHOWING THE FEES . WHY SHOULD I PAY FOR THEY MISTAKES.
