Hello; The Royal Princess left (most definitely) Ft. Lauderdale, Fla in December, 2000 and arrived in Civvatevechia, Italy in March, 2001 (world cruise) I have many PHOTOS of leaking pipes, un-eaten room service food outside in hallways, rusted metal, lack of lifebuoys on upper two decks, clothes dryers with torn lint screens (lint and other flamables piled behind washers and dryers) and other un-appetizing observations. The U.S. government has been WORTHLESS, in inspecting foreign registered ships carrying 2000-plus AMERICAN passengers! Thank you for your interest.
It left from Ft. Lauderdale in early Feb and arrived in Italy in mid April. It ended in Civitevechia (sp?)Italy (The port outside Rome) 72 days duration! Just because the ship was 18 yrs old is no reason not to take care of it! Deck boards can be preserved against the weather! Good quality CALK can keep water from seeping under beautiful wood.Rusted metal can be scraped down to bare metal, primed and painted with long lasting, QUALITY paint (like auto paint on a car roof which lasts over 100 years! None of this was standard proceedure on the Royal Princess. The cost of CONSTANT sloppy repair and maintainance far exceeds the cost of doing fewer quality repairs which last for many years. I can list many more mechanical and physical degradation nightmares on this ship. Unfortunately, the US government is useless when it comes to insuring the safety and health of American citizens on cruise ships. Inadequate ventillation is a prime area that needs to be corrected. Adequate ventillation on the Royal Princess can only be had when going outside the ship on the decks. My suggestion: Before taking ANY Princess cruise (I can only speak from experience on Princess)- the company should let you know when the ship will be in port where YOU CAN INSPECT IT JUST BEFORE IT LEAVES! If possible , talk to passengers as they leave the ship for the last time. AND REMEMBER- generally, people who ENJOY a product or service only tell selected friends. Those with horrible experiences usually don't take the time to list them on the internet.
They usually just chalk it up to experience and "stuff it!" I know that my experience on Princess represents the experience of many who choose to stuff it. I can tell you that many other passengers shared unpleasant experiences. For instance, the bus ride from Bombay to the Taj Mahal:
the toilet facilities on the bus on the long ride were practically non-existent. The men were able to relieve themselves along the way on the side of the road, but some of the women suffered terribly! POOR ATTENTION TO DETAIL ! I can contact some passengers and only suggest that if they want to say something about this event or other observations, they can contact you if they so desire. I hope more people will take the time to share their experience and knowledge with other consumers. Sincerely, Michael Corman
I was on a PRINCESS CRUISE SHIP. All I have to say is: 1. Overflowing toilets 2. Plugged shower drains (overflowing showers) 3. Loose upper deck floorboards (tripping hazzard) 4. Washing machines that leaked- causing 4" of water in the laundry room: a common occurance. 5. Leaking rusted water pipes in the ceiling corridors. 6. Food with no flavor. 7. Lint a paper trash behind the clothes dryers in laundry rooms. 8. Every two or three days- the smell of sewer gas throughout the ship! 9. NO LIFEBUOYS ON UPPER 2 DECKS! No floatation devices, what-so-ever on those decks! If someone fell overboard from the ship or from another ship while at port- you have to run 400' to either end of the ship and dowm 2 flights of stairs to get to a lifebuoy! This is just for starters. I sent photos and horror stories to the Coast Guard. Never heard back from them.
Princess is the "McDonalds" of cruises. Poor maintainance of EVERYTHING on the ship: water drains, decks, etc. They don't remove rust from deck rails and other metal parts on upper decks. THEY JUST PUT WHITE PAINT OVER THE RUST! Princess is the MCDONALD'S of cruise lines! This evaluation especially applicable to the Royal Princess. (Why would the other ships be any better?) (2000 world cruise.) I doubt things have improved! The safety staff, maintainance staff and crew accomodations officer- totally incompetent in my opinion. The passengers and the rest of the staff were great!
