Therma Tru Doors - an odyssey of incompetence
Over one year ago, I purchased an expensive Therma Tru front door for our home. We paid over $5000 for the door plus installation fees. The lumber company we purchased it through ordered the door from Therma Tru's local dealer, Hal's Millwork.
The door was installed improperly and after more than a year for Hal's and Rum River Lumber still don't have it installed properly. Also, the Therma Tru door is coming apart. We have been constantly put off, phone calls to Therma Tru go unreturned and we have been told by Hal's that our problem was a very low priority. Then the door's wood and glass panels started to come loose. They would move and you could see where the area underneath panels that hadn't been stained showed. It looked awful. We called Therma Tru directly and they made some promises but never followed through. Hal's came out to fix the problem after about 8 weeks and the guy they sent apparently didn't have the right tool.
After another 8 weeks, we finally bubbled up enough on their priority list and the same guy came out again. Bottom line, they never have fixed this problem. Therma Tru has told Rum River Lumber that they had a representative to our house. This amazes us because no Therma Tru rep has ever showed up at our house. If fact, they don't even return our calls. The door was installed improperly. It was mounted too low and this caused the weather stripping to be ripped off the bottom of the door when we opened it. After one full year of monthly complaints, Rum River finally had someone come out and raise the door. This fixed the weather stripping problem, but they didn't put on new molding on the inside so now our molding is now about 3/4 inch from the floor. It looks terrible. Bottom Line: First, don't ever buy a door made by Therma Tru, in my experience and opinion.
In spite of all the claims on their web site, they don't give a rip in my opinion about customer service after they get paid. Second, if Hal's Millwork of Inver Grove Heights, MN is involved, find another dealer quick, they were incompetent with us, and will tell you you're a low priority if you have problems after they get paid. Third, Rum River Lumber is totally ineffective in dealing with these complaints; they are pleasant on the phone, but nothing ever happens after they talk to you. Therma Tru's headquarters are in Maumee, OH. Hal's Millwork is located in Inver Grove Heights, MN. Rum River Lumber is located in Coon Rapids, MN. I purchased doors through Seal Guard Systems in Blaine MN. Instead of giving me the quality Precision Doors I ordered, Seal Guard provided me with much lower quality Therma Tru door via Hal's Millwork. The doors did not seal tight, warped and peeled. This happened on all of the doors they put in. Working with Seal Guard has been horrendous. I would never do business with them again. Think twice before you have any dealings with these people!
