Mr. Coffee pot by Sunbeam - malfunction in the dripping mechanism - water frequently leaks from the coffee basket and runs all over the table and floor

We purchased a Mr. Coffee coffee pot (Model # UNX33) for our office. There seems to be a malfunction in the dripping mechanism because it frequently fills water up into the coffee basket and runs over all over the table, floor, etc. We have tried doing the recommended cleaning cycles, but, has not alleviated this problem.

This has occurred off and on since we bought the coffee pot from Wal-Mart. Our employer did not keep the receipt from the store so we are unable to bring it back. What can we possibly do to stop this from happening. The frequent spillovers has ruined the carpeting in the breakroom. Your immediate assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.
