CompUSA - False Advertising - rebate for Toshiba laptop had expired already

Complaints.com received the following consumer message on May 14, 2002:

RE: CompUSA - False Advertising - rebate for Toshiba laptop had expired already

I spent considerable time in searching the planet for the "perfect" laptop (a Toshiba) for my particular needs, and I found it in an on-line advertisement at CompUSA's website. The issues that tipped the balance for me were the combination of a $50 manufacturer rebate (listed as good until June 13, 2002) plus the promise of two free software downloads from the manufacturer.

When I got to the point of filing the rebate claim, I discovered on Toshiba's website that the rebate offer had in fact already expired in April. The laptop powered up perfectly, with a "Toshiba free software download" icon all set up but leading to nowhere. Apparently the software offer had expired as well. Neither CompUSA nor Toshiba seem to care, now that they have made the sale.

Toshiba is incredibly difficult to contact (couldn't find a worthwhile e-mail address, no response to Internet postings in their "Forum," telephone Customer Service was worthless), and all CompUSA wants to do is to deny any and all responsibility. Ever so fortunately, my wife is an attorney. We'd love to resolve this peacefully, and this posting is our last resort. I merely want to know from where and when will my $50 be coming.
