Telemarketing Scam - magazine subsriptions - CMS Magazines : fell for CMS Magazines scam

Complaints.com received the following e-message on June 6, 2001:

Hi I would just like to say that I am a little disappointed in myself for not

listening better. I was called by a random telemarketing representative

who congratulated me on a sweepstakes entry (which I never entered - I

never enter into any sweepstakes). Then I was told that I was to be

rewarded a 3 year subscription of magazines of my choosing. Cool - I thought. Of course, there was a catch. Now mind you, I am at

work, with my mind on a hundred other things and, I have to admit, I really

wasn't paying attention to this young lady. I was told that I could pay

for just one magazine and still continue to recieve the other magazines.

Okay, I thought "No problem". After getting all my information and some serious thinking over the next

week or two, I decided I was no longer interested in recieving the

magazines. Now being that I have not recieved a magazine (I was told it

would take 4-6 weeks; however, they billed me the same day of the call), I

felt that I should not have to pay for the rest of the subscription.

WRONG! I was told not only that I could not cancel, but that I was

responsible for paying the remaining balance (about $340.00) whether or not

I received the magazines. The vendor's name is CMS Magazines and their phone number is

1-800-367-2921. Please let this be a warning to all the people who receive

the bubbly, cheery calls from these telemarketers. Also be aware of the "I

just want to congratulate you on your recent entry into sweepstakes" or

"You will receive the other magazines for free, but we do ask that you help

us out with just one". Thanks, Nica
