RE: 1996 GMC SAFARI AWD - driver's side torsion bar broke - serious safety issue
As with the complaint I just read about the owner of a 1995 GMC Safari, I also had my driver's side torsion bar break while it was just sitting in the garage overnight! I have been an auto mechanic since 1972, and I have never seen anything like it.
Cars have had torsion bar suspensions since the 1960's that I know of (Chrysler products) and I have never known of one to just snap, especially a 1996 with only 98,000 miles!
I agree with the other complaintant - this is a SERIOUS safety issue for GM, an unheard-of problem, and if it had happened to me on the road with my family aboard or not, I would sue GM for sure!!
