RE: 1997 Mercury Grand Marque - 67,000 miles and steering suddenly has problems

Owner 1997 Mercury Grand Marque 2melm75w9vx669768. Vehicle has 67,000 miles suddenly has steering problem where steering wheel has free play about a quarter turn of the steering wheel car darts to left or right difficult to correct.

This problem occurs suddenly then can stop for a long period then return at any time. Called Mercury there is no recall but from my experience others may be having the same problem.

Appreciate any guidance you might give.

I owned a 1979 cougar with this simular problem. I beleive the hard rubber grommit used as a spacer, also as a shock devicice located on the steering linkage need be replaced.(where the two links flange together).
