RE: Sears Home Improvement - Texture Coating - eves peeling badly for several years - no help from Sears
My name is Dan DeBusschere.
My complaint as against Sears Home Improvement. In 1987 my godmother had her single family home texture coated and the eaves painted by Sears Texture Coating. It carried a 15 year warranty. For several years the eaves have been peeling badly, but I was not aware that it was covered by warranty.
Then she died, coincidently, exactly when the warranty expired. And a few days ago in going through her paperwork, I found the receipt and the warranty text.
Now Sears Home Improvement refuses to accommodate me in any way because the "warranty is expired" and even though I have proof that this peeling didn't just start "yesterday" they don't want to discuss it any further. Well, I just want to advise anyone considering home improvement that the subs that are used by Sears are not all that quality oriented and I would never personally consider using any of them just so Sears can take a commission on the work, because they do NOT stand behind the contractors with their "satisfaction guarantee" as they advertise, so why pay the surcharge to have them involved in the contract anyhow?
The cost of texture-coating and painting the eaves on this single-family home was by the way, $4500, and I'm SURE I could have found a "reputable contractor" who would have been pleased to do the work PROPERLY for about $2500 or less.
Wasting time to go to small claims court probably wouldn't do me much good, as the contract expired recently and they were NOT notified of these problems "during the warranty period" so even though I may not have a "LEGAL leg to stand on" at least I want to pass on this information to future "potential victims"

The fact that you didnt know it was under warranty, and now it has expired, makes it their fault? Come on....How will some one become a "potential victim"? Will any other company fix something thats out of warranty for free? If your car breaks down, and the warranty has expired, should they fix it for free? Get real, you`re trying to get something for free. Maybe, when it started peeling, you should have looked for the paper work then, not AFTER the warranty has expired... You, nor your Grandmother were victims of anything. Stop trying to get a company to pay for something, you are not entitled to. Next time, read the paper work. Not to mention, you`re quite lucky it lasted that long. Most wood work(eaves) need to be repainted every 5-7 years.....
