RE: 1997 Mazda Protoge - oxygen sensors burned out - failed emmissions testing - emissions not ablve EPA standard I own a 1997 Mazda Protoge. The check engine light has been on since the day I bought it. It failed the emmisions testing because of the oxygen sensors being burnt out.
Although the car is not exuding emmisions above the EPA standard, I now have to pay $600.00 to have new ones put in the exhaust system. I previously owned a 1995 Ford Contour with the same problem.
The Ford passed the emmissions testing because at the time the State of Wisconsin didn't have the equipment installed in the emmissions testing stations to do the OBC testing.
