Washington Mutual Classic credit cad - Citibank - attempt to pay off card entirely resulted in account put into collections - over $ 21 balance that attempted to pay off to begin with

Complaints.com received the following consumer message on January 30, 2003:

I paid the balance of the credit card in December 02. The balance left was $21 or so and tried to pay that off as well in January. There on-line software would not allow me to pay the balance since it was greater than the balance.

I entered the exact $ and cents on the Washington Mutual (Citibank) site. Now after a couple weeks, I get a call from Citibank telling me that I am in collections because I didn't pay the $21 balance on the card. Sometimes I'd receive 2 calls/day at home.

When I tried to call the 800 number they left, the number would forward to a 900 number for some reason--I think the Citi rep left the wrong number. OK, so tonight I finally got home early enough to actually answer the Citi cust. rep..

She said I was late on $21 and was in collections and that I must pay immediately. I told her that I finally was able to get the system to accept a payment of $21. She said that didn't matter; I had to pay now. So I told her to cancel the account via a on-line check; I want out of the credit card.

They charge me $15.00 to cancel the acct. I called Citibank's customer service and explained the situation. THEY TRIED TO change my mind and reactive the card--no way
