1998 Astro Van Defective Differential - two axel failures

I bought my first new GM vehicle in 22 years. The last one, a 79 Buick Regal was pure GM Junk. We hoped things had changed since the Japanese invasion. They did not.

This 1998 Astrovan has had two rear axle failures - one at 37,000 miles and one at 82,000. It is driven only on the freeway and has never towed anything.

Our extended warantee expired at 75,000 miles. The dealer wants nearly $5000.00 to repair it all. Since this is our first new car in all this time we have pampered it.

We have followed the book. THE THREE DRIVE LINE MECHANICS I have consulted say the differential and axle are a lifetime component, that should outlast the transmission and engine easily. The Differential Shops tell me that the Astro Van has a light duty axle - similar to a camaro.

We thought , by GMs ads and printed material that the Astro was on a truck drive line. Wrong. Looks like General Motors is still making those famous GM CRAP CARS.
