1989 4WD Mitsubishi Montero - blew gasket at 45,00 miles

I bought one of the first full-size Mitsubishi Montero 4WD in 1989. Apparently there was a problem with the six cylinder engine first used in these vehicles.

It blew a head gasket after about 45000 miles. I had the engine rebuilt, at a high cost of course, and it lasted another 30000 miles. Then a valve burned out. I now have a five cylinder engine.

The local dealer mechanic said there was an inherent defect in the original block; a cylinder sleeve which dropped down and caused the valves to burn out somehow.

The dealer said that Mitsubishi quietly corrected the defect but did not issue a recall. I think I should receive either a free rebuild or at least pay only for parts.
