Haxby's, Crownhill, Plymouth - concerned about spare tire provided with used vehicle purchase

Complaints.com received the following consumer message on February 25, 2003:

2 weeks ago, we purchased a vehicle from Haxby's, Crownhill, Plymouth. When we were checking over the car at home and adding tools to the spare wheel area, we noticed that the spare wheel was very well worn, we thought the tyre was illegal. We contacted Haxby's after having the car for a week and brought this to their attention.

They asked us to bring the car in to be checked out, which we did on Saturday 22/1/03. One of the servicing staff checked the tyre and confirmed that it was legal having taken measurements of the tread. We were not satisfied and said we thought it was very near being illegal if not already. We were told it definitely was OK and there was nothing they could do about it. We then came back to Saltash where we live and took it to Wilf Dawes, a tyre specialist. They confirmed is was definitely illegal and were amazed that Haxby's had not realised this.
