food stamps

food stamps food stamps October 15, 2006 I have a complaint that perhaps you can help me with. I was receiving food stamp benefits for a period of time. When I went to reapply, I was denied for making too much money. OK. That is fine BUT, now they are demanding that I pay back all the benefits that I received. Here is the complaint: I applied, filled out all the forms, had a meeting, presented ALL the data they requested PLUS the agency called my job to confirm my salary and I met the criteria so I started to receive benefits. Now, they admit it (me getting benefits), "was an agency error claim" which means somehow I am responsible for paying back the cash amount in $5,340.86. I am in shock. Then I receive this letter that states if I do not pay back their error, they will attack my federal return. I can not believe it. I was not given a monetary amount. The benefits are ONLY good for food--not cigarettes, alochol, wine, beer, detergent, any non-food items. I have a family of 6! All benefits were used for food. I thought you may know the agency or department where I could get some assistance or plead my case about this serious financial injustice. Thanking you in advance for your help.
