John Moore Services - Houston, Texas - Air Conditioning

July 14, 2006

I have had a bad experience with this company recently. We called John Moore Services about 45 days ago to do an a/c check up right before the Houston Summer hit. We were given an all clear.

This week we had an electrical issue and called John Moore again. Less than 1 hour after their electrician our a/c went out. Calling John Moore one more time; they gave us a 5 hour window between 8 am and 1 pm for the next day. The John Moore technician arrived at nearly 12:30 pm (in 95 degree temps). After an hour of checking and double checking we were told the compressor was going out and would need replaced. The technician, offered to check to see if the unit was still under warranty. If it was under warranty we would only be charged $1400.00 labor. If it wasn't under warranty, this tech recommended we just replace the whole unit ($5000.00) because it is easier to put in a new unit than it is to replace the compressor.

I will take this moment, to tell you our home is just 4 years old. Guess the tech didn't know that because he indicated his doubt that the unit was under warranty. We paid for the service call with him leaving us to wait for him to find out if our compressor was warranted.

I am compelled to share this experience for a number of reasons (1) it has been 3 days and we still have not heard from John Moore. I realize it is the busy time of year for all a/c companies, however: Shouldn't an a/c technician typically know the warranties the major equipment companies? i.e. York. (2) I personally went online with my model number to the York website and in less than 2 minutes found that the compressor was warranted for 10 years. While that offered me a feeling of relief because I didn't have to pay $5000.00; I began to question why I would be paying $1400.00 for a warranted part.

This knowledge combined with the lack of any further communication from John Moore led me to a 2nd opinion. I actually found an independent heating and cooling company on the York website. The owner answered the phone and the owner visited my home. His service call ran just about the same rate, and took about the same amount of time... checking all the same details. This technicians conclusion was that the thermostat was going out. He did some minor tightening of wires and the unit began working fine. After having the a/c run for the remainder of the day, and many discussions with my husband about this John Moore assessment and recommendation, we decided to have the thermostat replaced. Even despite the fact that the unit was now operating to our satisfaction, we had this 2nd company come out and replace the thermostat and so far our home is staying cool.

Bottom line is John Moore was in our home 3 times over the past 6 to 7 weeks and we now know each time providing us poor service. But what is more, they either tried to sell us something we truly didn't need, or were so sloppy in their assessment, and lacking in knowledge and experience that they shouldn't be performing these types of repairs.

I would not recommend this company to anyone, just the opposite, I would discourage using John Moore Services. My experience has proven there is more dedication and commitment to quality by individually owned companies who's owners have a true focus on good work.
