black RX330 Lexus from Johnson Lexus of Raleigh in NC

September 7, 2005

Hello, I purchased a black RX330 Lexus from Johnson Lexus of Raleigh in NC. Within 4 weeks the black paint developed 4 areas of fine scratches. The dealership first claimed the scratches were from dirt...then they claimed it was from cleaning the car...now they say that "the black pain in Lexus shows alot because of its reflection." I am in the process of contacting the AG office NC, the BBB of CA, and I am also trying to get the situation to arbitration. We know someone else who bought a black car from this same dealership and had the same problem. And since it is doubtful that the black paint nationwide is defective, either this dealership is selling cars with defective black paint or the car is coming from a factory that is using defective black paint. I have inspected cars in South Florida, as have me relatives, and these scratches are not on Lexus' being sold in South Florida. The GM of the dealership has no comment when asked to explain why someone else had this same problem. I find it hard to believe that Lexus sells a paint that develops scratches for no reason within 4 weeks of purchase. Buffing the scratches does not take them out either. I hope to resolve this issue by getting another color RX.....and this whole situation occurred after the dealership sold me a RX330 with acid rain stains on the roof which they replaced once they could not get the acid rain stain out. Thank you.

As a previous owner of a black Lexus, I couldn't help but commetn about this posting. Unfortunately the error that dealership made was in selling you a black Lexus. Obviously you are particular about the finish on your vehicles and they should have informed you that black and some reds are the only colors in the Lexus line up that do not have a clear coat finish on them. For years a clear coat finish has been added over the base paint job of nearly every car manufactured, but in order to have the most brilliant black possible, Lexus chooses not to apply a clear coat finish to their black cars/SUVs. This makes them more prone to scratches and other damage (such as acid rain).
