Delta Airlines / American Express Rip-offs!

September 21, 2005

Delta Airlines/American Express. I have been unable to resolve an issue working with American Express and Delta airlines. I have twice disputed an unauthorized amount charged to my credit card. In January 2005 I contacted all the major airlines directly inquiring about bereavement fair due to my father passing away. I was ask by a Delta Airlines representative how many passengers and where I was flying to and from. I stated I needed a ticket for myself, my wife and my son to fly from Los Angeles to Charlotte, N.C. roundtrip. I was ask how old my son was. After being put on hold I was quoted a price of $1028.30. My wife was beside me and listen to the conversation as the phone was on speaker. I provided my American Express credit card and purchased the tickets. I later discovered I was billed $3084.90 for three tickets vice $1028.30 as I was quoted. I never authorized $3084.90 to be billed to my credit card. Prior to contacting the airline directly, my wife and I had went online and found tickets for all three of us in the $1200.00 to $1500.00 range by going thru Expedia and Travelocity. Therefore, when I contacted the Delta airlines directly regarding bereavement fair $1028.30 seem appropriate. At no time was the amount quoted as per ticket nor at no time was a total amount of $3084.90 ever mentioned. I immediately contacted Delta Airlines and was instructed I needed to contact American Express to resolve this issue. I contacted American Express and explained what happened and disputed the charge. After the initial investigation American Express inform me they had contacted the airlines and I needed to return the unused tickets for a refund. I never stated I had unused tickets so I filed another dispute and made sure to explain again the details of what transpired. Again, I received notice the investigation was completed and the amount was added back to my account. The notice stated if I felt I was overcharged and/or duplicate billing I needed to provide proof of the overcharge. The proof is clearly stated on my American Express account summary closing date Feb 14, 2005. While American Express investigated my claim they ran a credit check on me. Apparently they wanted to see if I was having some financial problems. I've been told by American Express that airlines always quote price per ticket. Always is a big word for people to use who were not apart of the conversation between myself and Delta. My policy is I always pay the price quoted to me. I will see them in court.

I understand your frustration. Delta Airlines has no compassion and concurrently explains why their airline is held at such low satisfaction. Once they have your money, you can consider it gone. They took my money without remorse and the ticket will never be used.

I empathise with your situation and find Delta/American Express to be in the gray area as far as ethics. We cancelled an American Express card due to it being breached and applied for a competitors card. We then received another offer in the mail for Delta/American Express, we applied over the phone and asked about when we would receive our award miles. Their representative said as soon as the first purchase was made. We made the purchase and were then sent a letter that we would not receive any miles because it was in the "fine print" that you cannot recieve miles if you re-apply. The representative failed to mention that when we applied and asked about the points. We spoke to a supervisor and were told its our fault for not reading the fine print and did not car eabout our situation. I learned a lesson that you have to be weary of unethical companies that work in a grey area to dupe consumers. If you are thinking of applying for a Delta/American expres all I can say is "buyer beware".
