This is the complaint we sent to American Airlines regarding my wifes travel today and her luggage. They responded by saying that it really was not their concern and there was nothing they could do.

Hello, I flew the Fresno to LAX flight this morning. I was on my way to Houston. I work for a company that is sending me to Louisiana to assist FEMA with recovery efforts after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. My experience at your desk during check-in was terrible. The women that were working this morning were extremely rude to everyone that was trying to check in. The problem I wrote to complain about is that I was charged $80 for oversized luggage. This is the only suitcase I have and I will be gone for a minimum of 30 days. Obviously, I have a lot to pack for that amount of time. I have flown several other airlines with this suitcase and have never had a single problem. I understand you have requirements for luggage size now, but they were not posted anywhere in that airport and are not easy to find online. The woman working brings out a tape measure, after she glared at me, and measured my suitcase. It came up to 65 inches, which is 3 inches over size. That measurement was not exactly what I would call scientific considering she just held the tape up over the curved ends of the suitcase corners and kind of estimated the size. This whole thing is just very unacceptable. I had barely 3 days notice that I was leaving and had to get everything done to be able to make this flight. Buying suitcases was not something I had time for or felt was necessary. Also, There are a lot of expenses I have to cover at my destination, including rental cars and hotel accommodations. This seriously ate into my available funds and is completely unjustified. Good to know that American Airlines and their subsidiaries are so concerned about this country and helping people.
