My wife and I frequently send flowers to thank friends and recognize special occasions. The Enchanted Florist is a nearby florist in an area of explosive residential growth. They are in a rather seedy strip mall with a bare bones store front. As a small business entrepreneur myself, I decided to give them our business. The bare bones store front should have been a tipoff to poor service, late flowers, old flowers, arrangements that were not what the customer would otherwise expect based on price etc. In other words, just the kinds of things that one fears when ordering flowers, but can rarely confirm. After all, most recipients wont complain to the sender that the gift of flowers was in fact a delivery of old wilting produce. And most recipients wont know if the gift of flowers was supposed to be a $60 arrangement or a $100 arrangement. Who would know? Who would complain to the sender? The Enchanted Florist in Stafford, VA appears to be a struggling enterprise, trying hard to put itself out of business. I knew and suspected little or none of the above until they were late with another delivery. The owner called a day after the scheduled local delivery to ask for directions. When we expressed our dismay at a second late delivery to the same street, the owner got defensive and insulting. She complained that the street was not in Mapquest and ergo not her responsibility to find without explicit directions which she was a day late in seeking. Special occasion OVER! When I expressed dismay that she seemed to be blaming the customer for the fact that her delivery area is growing by leaps and bounds (while her store seems to diminish in business), she asked me to take my business elsewhere. So the Enchanted Florist expects to sell the beauty of flowers in old merchandise and with poor customer skills. Good luck. If I succeed in warning other business off, Ill at least feel better about the lousy merchandise my recipients have now admitted to getting from the Enchanted Florist.
