Compaq Laptops

October 28, 2005

Hi there...

I'm writing about a common defect with Compaq Laptops. Mine in particular is a 2500 series laptop. The problem isn't isolated to this model numer(s). The problem is that the dc jack where the power adapter connects to the laptop is easily broken. If you do a search via keywords "compaq power jack", you see how problematic this is. I mean, there's a lot of complaints. You would expect laptops to withstand more punishment due to it movability/portability. I've called Compaq about it and told them that there are a lot of people that have the same problem. When I ask about the repair, since the warranty is out, they told me that I'd have to pay for the parts and labor...I guess I can understand. Although it's a lot of money to fix, it is cheaper than buying another laptop. I personally think that there should be a recall on the products due to design and questionable durability. I was told that the "fix" would be in the form of a new board, which according to an internet search, is around $300. Many others with the problem with the dc jack say that the problem is isolated to a cracked jack and or solder joint. A replacement jack goes for $25. Sorry for the ramble, but again, seems like it's a design flaw...just wish Compaq would own up and clean the mess. Ryan Click this link to e-mail the message author: Email User
