Kitchen remodel complaint Kitchen remodel complaint October 24, 2005 Cabinet Discounters at 9500 Berger Road Columbia, Md. 21046. The remodel started October 2003. Over a 2 year period their personnel have damaged many items and even though we have tried to work with them to resolve the issues we usually ended up making concessions in an effort to get the job completed. Several of the original cabinets came in damaged, some were repaired and the ones that their furniture repair company said could not be repaired to their original condition were replaced. Then the counter top Granite was incorrectly cut 3 times and one area was not repairable. Four months after the job had begun, Cabinet Discounters agreed to completely replace the Granite but their sub-contractor, Norwood, did not secure the new Granite we reserved at Marble Systems and it was sold to another customer. After another 4 months of searching and considerable expense to us, we reached an agreement to take a reduction in cost and accepted the damaged granite so we could get the job completed. Two months later I was still calling trying to get their personnel out to complete the job. Then the cabinet doors were damaged and had to be repaired. Some were not repaired to our satisfaction but because we were trying to get the job completed we again accepted damaged merchandise. One of the reason we made the concession was because we were told that they could not match the stain to our original cabinets. It became apparent that we had been misinformed when they finally were able to match a door that was not repairable. There was one final outstanding item that had been a problem from the onset of the job. There is a shelf/valance that had been ordered wrong by the salesman. Even though we wanted the cabinet manufacturer to redo it to contact agreement, Cabinet Discounter decided to get the wood and try to replicate it instead. However, it was agreed that if we did not find it satisfactory they would go back to the manufacturer. The shelf was cut, re-cut, restained numerous times and edged to try and make it look professional and even though it was still not right we agreed to accept it as is. Then while installing it their manager, Ward, damaged it. An attempt was made to redo the shelf by purchasing wood at an area hardware store but it did not match the cabinets. This shelf was not satisfactory. We were told we would have to put in writing exactly what we wanted done before another attempt would be made. At this time the manager, Ward, wanted us to make an additional payment against the unpaid balance. We were not comfortable doing this because we were afraid that with a smaller amount unpaid that they would not complete the job satisfactory. Ward gave us his word that Cabinet Discounters would not walk away from the job until it was satisfactorily completed. We Faxed a letter on September 19, 2005 to Mr. John Mikk with a request that the wood and stain match the original cabinets and that the arch in the valance match the original contact as well. We did not hear anything from the contractor. I contacted them in October to be told that they had taken the shelf that was unsatisactory to us and re-stained it and we either accepted it and let them install it or they were walking away from the job. We requested that Mr. Mikk call us to discuss this matter and he refused. Instead he issued a letter stating that if we paid them the balance due they would deliver the shelf as is but now they will not even install it. They are walking away from their contractual agreement to complete this job. We have experienced considerable inconvenience and expense over the duration of trying to get Cabinet Discounters to complete the job professionally. We have tried to work with them even when they have disregarded our wishes and made decissions contrary to our requests. All we want is the last remaining outstanding item to be completed according to the contract and our letter dated Sept. 19, 2005 and for it to be installed without being damaged.
