Chinese chops

November 7, 2005 Capricorn's Lair, Ogden, Utah. Chinese chops are carved stones that are used to make an imprint like our rubber stamps. I wanted 22 of these to give to my eighth grade class as graduation presents. Cost: close to $400. We had just studied China. I made an Internet search and found a lovely product. Since there was no indication of what the imprint of the chop was, I called Capricorn's Lair to find out what the imprint was. When I was told it was the name of an animal in the Chinese zodiac, I ordered the product on the phone. The order came promptly. The bad news was that the chops were uncarved and made no imprint. I returned them immediately. The merchant refused the order and did not answer my e-mail. My credit card company agreed to cancel my charges after I presented evidence of the unacceptable product. Capricorn's Lair then referred my account over to a collection agency. When I explained everything to the collection agency they helped convince CL that no one in their right mind would want to pay for "rubber stamps" that don't stamp anything. A no- brainer to anyone looking at the matter except, of

course, the folks at Capricorn's Lair.

After commenting previously that seals normally come blank, I checked on Google and found a few sites that do sell chops with imprints. That was much more common than I thought so I can understand now why the original complainant could mistake being told about the animal "carvings" being the actual imprint instead of just the carving on top of the chop. The store should have refunded the money because of this misunderstanding.

Chinese chops always come blank and without an imprint. The purchaser will have a name or insignia carved onto the blank bottom after selecting the chop -- normally it is the name (or close Chinese approximation) of the person who will receive it. I looked at the web site and saw that the chops they sell are elaborately carved at the top with different zodiac animals, hence the confusion between "carving" and "imprint." More study of Chinese culture is needed by the teacher (should have known that the chops come blank), and better customer relations is needed by the business (should have returned the money).
