Northwestern Bell 5.8mghz model 35828A portable phone and answering machine - purchased oct 2005 and volume doesn’t work—cant hear the conversation

Have made sure all wires are connected and even plugged another phone into the jack to make sure the jack works. I have emailed the company with no answer and have tried for 2 days to get through to the 800 #, ( 1-800-888-8990 ) always busy.....they also don’t respond to emails I have no recourse at all Thanks phil Teaneck nj 07666
