SAAB 2002 9-5 ARC model
November 19, 2005
A number of SAAB models have a problem where due to a defective ignition discharge module (IDM), the part can burn of and kill the engine. I was driving on a residential street Nov. 17, 2005, when this happened to me - car first started losing power and then died with smoke coming out of the engine. The car is inoperable after this happens, and the replacement parts for the IDM are roughly $900 (not including labor charges). I found a recall notice for 2002 SAAB 9-5 V4 and V6 engines on the internet for this problem (and the recall notice notes correctly that this problem can lead to a crash), but because not enough incidents have been reported yet to the Department of Highway Safety for the V6 model, SAAB is refusing to fix this and also is not sending out notices about this potentially deadly problem to v6 customers. This is the same defective part and problem that they are now fixing on 2001 9-5 V6s and 2002 9-5 V4s and all the 9-3 models. I find this completely inexcusable, and they are putting their customers' lives in jeopardy. Dave
