January 17, 2006 - Consumer Follow-up Message:

The manager called me the next afternoon and rectified the problem the next day. He sincerely appoligized. He refunded my credit card, fired the waiter and gave me a voucher to return to the restaurant. He said that he wanted to get me out of the restaurant as soon as possible as i was very angry towards the waiter. problem solved!!!!!

Sotto Sotto - North Highland Ave, Atlanta- Horrible Birthday service ever October 31st, 2005!!!! I decided to go to this restaurant for my wife's birthday on Monday.The creative loafing critics said it was the best Italian food in Atlanta. What they neglected to mention was that the service is by far the worst in Atlanta and possibly any where in the world ( I have traveled all around the world). The evening started with my wife and I being placed into a nice cozy seat by a man dressed in a woman's military uniform ( please remember it is Halloween). I guess they wanted to assume the role fully, so without a smile or any pleasantries we were ushered to our seats. We sat and waited for our waiter dressed in a Jester's costume. He gave us our menu. I asked him about the family style meals, wine specials, and items on the menu I had researched on their website http://www.sottosottorestaurant.com/. The serious jester with a slight HINT of alcohol on his breath attempted to explain to me as if I was a child how it all worked and that the menu was changed but not the website and the wine specials even though it was listed did not exist. We got our first two servings on time and waited 20 mins to 30 mins for the rest whilst I observed the Jester cheerfully serving his other customers around us and giving them timely service. One couple at the side of us had a nice conversation with him whilst taking a picture and the others got cheerful service. One group was finished with all 3 of their servings before us and they came afterwards. All during the meal my wife and I tried to joke with the serious jester and got no response. When the bill came, I inquired the amount of the bill which apparently showed two charges for their wine (labeled Bin 253). We asked the jester server to check the amount again. When he returned he stated that our bill was correct with the amount showed and was in fact $152.00 instead of $119.00 because 'he was afraid of getting stiffed by the european tip' ( my wife is white European and I am of African and Caribbean Decent) so he added a 20% gratuity to out party of two quite rudely. I requested to see the manager and was told that this was unacceptable service from his server and that he to was white european and took offence to the statement. I saw no repercussions aimed at the server only a smirk from both. I paid my bill without ant tip and left. I was about to praise the restaurant and would easily have brought new clientele to the sotto sotto restaurant who would spend over $150.00 each time. I have decided against this and will never return to sotto sotto. I was very sorry for my wife who had a horrible birthday.Sotto Sotto Restaurant
