McAfee rebates

How does McAfee make money? And how do they manage to retain any customers? You can’t walk into an electronics store these days and not see piles of red boxes with big yellow signs marked “FREE!! (after rebate)” So you buy one for $69 and upon arriving home you discover that the rebate form is actually a tiny sticker that you peel off the box. The sticker measures 1 inch by 1 inch with instructions in 4-point font. The glue is still on the sticker, and on the print side, so no marker will write on it. When you get the glue off with acetone, the plastic surface won’t accept ink. And when you try to write anyway, the spaces are so tiny that it would take a micro-surgeon to fill in the information. You manage to fill in the form, which asks for all manner of promo codes like AO40-77358Z that have billions of possible combinations and purposely mix up zeroes (“0”) and capital-ohs (“O”) so as to confuse. You know that if you miss just one, you’re toast. You then photocopy the materials and send them in. And then you wait. And wait. And wait some more. Months later, if you’re lucky, you get back a tiny white postcard with 4-point instructions that say something like, “Thank you for participating in our promotion. We could not honor your request due to: No email address provided.” So you dust off your photocopy and there for all to see is you email address. You photocopy the photocopies and send them back in, knowing full well that there will never be a response and you’re now out $69 plus postage. Folks, this is fraud. It’s conspiracy to commit fraud. It’s mail fraud. It’s any number of Federal crimes for which the perpetrators (read: CEO and Board) should be packed up in orange jumpsuits and shipped off to Guantanamo. Can you think of any more toxic way to repel customers than this? And to think that the only reason I switched to McAfee was because Symantec was worse.
