I purchased this refrigerator in August 2004 from Sears. A few weeks later I began hearing a noise it would make shortly after cycling on. It lasts 15 seconds or so, then stops. Best I can describe it would be a creaky sound - like something is turning or moving and could benefit from a dose of household oil. Sounds like it's coming from the top or back of the freezer compartment.
The Sears repairman said it was a normal operating noise that had something to do with the new refrigerant thats being used in the refrigerators now, although he was unable to explain why I didnt hear it during the first few weeks after purchase. I went up to Sears to listen to the bottom freezer refrigerators that they have plugged in to see if I could hear this same sound and didn't hear a thing, nor have I ever heard it with any other refrigerator.
So the 'normal operating noise' diagnosis sounds like baloney. This noise has steadily gotten louder over time. Amana's advice was to place a piece of carpet underneath, which doesn't do a thing. The appliance seems to be operating normally, but this noise drives me nuts everytime the refrigerator cycles on.
