September 3, 2005 - Consumer Follow-up Message:

Update to complaint: Received my renewal...Reader's Digest confirmed that they received my two year renewal from "National Publisher Exchange" (guess Readers Publication Services uses more than one name). I don't know why I finally got my subscription "money", but I did follow through by sending complaints to the States Attorney General and the Post Office, I also contacted my bank to see if anything could be done (never heard anything back from my bank).

Well, guess I got took by a really old scam....which I unfortunately only learned about after the fact while reading messages on your site.

Received several renewal notices for Reader's Digest in March and my subscription renewal date was coming up real soon...so I picked the renewal which seemed to give the best deal (I thought it was from a Reader's Digest affiliate). Made a check payable to Reader's Digest for $49.52 and sent it in the Readers Publication Services envelope....DID NOT make the check payable to Readers Publications, but they deposited it in their account anyway.

I am going to report this to my State's Attorney General, the Post Office, the Better Business Bureau, and any other authority that might have some jurisdiction over this kind of FRAUD and THEFT BY UNLAWFUL TAKING. Hopefully, if enough of us do this something will be done about this ILLEGAL activity.

The various legitimate publishing companies should also be taking this very seriously....as it is likely to be detrimental to there sales.
