Can you beat this. I make a purchase of $360.11at Best Buy and pay for this by check. The checking account has been established for 3 years now, check numbers in the high 600's, plenty of money in the account, a clean record of check writing with no check bouncing on file and all of this at a well known bank, in the region, that guareentees all checks to clear and that I have patronized for the past 25 years. So, it takes a while for the check to clear thru the check clearing service that works in conjuction with Best Buy...the checkout girl on the phone for a while but finally hangs-up and apologizing for the delay, and off I go with my purchase.
Next purchase, at Office Depot for $164.30. Again, the same thing, except this time it takes almost 15 minutes and the checkout girl informs me that my check has been denied and tells me that I have to call a 1-800 number to find out more information as to why. I pay for my purchase with cash and immediately call this number to inquire about my dilema. I finally speak to a rep who tells me that my check is not a guaranteed form of payment until it clears thru their check clearing process, my check numbers are low, and that my check did not met their guidelines.
The name of the company ...Certegy Check Services, Inc. I ask what guidelines are my checks not meeting, so that I may remedy the problem and continue writing checks in the future. I also asked what retailers they work with so I know which ones to avoid, and the names of the banks that they work with.
They tell me they do not have access to which guidelines that my checks are not meeting and they cannot give me any other information, and that they will send me an application to fill-out so that I can increase the amounts that i write my checks for and to also put me on a V.I.P. list so that this will not hinder my future check writing..untill then my checks will continue to be denied...WHAT THE F***! The next day I go to my financial establishment to address this situation and discuss this with a manager. The bank manager tells me they cannot do this.
I ask him to call the number given to me to confirm my call. He spoke to a supervisor who said told him the same that they told me the night before and also named Target, Kohls, Wal-Mart, Sears, Radio Shack, Office Depot, and Best Buy to name only a few.......the basic big name chains and as far as the banks....their were none they worked with. Before Certegy came along..all checks went thru Tel-a-check Services and I never had a problem. What kind of establishment is this and when did they acquire this power to deny my checks. I live in Hammond,IN 46324
So I was wondering if there are any consumers in this area whom are also having a problem with this Certergy Check Services. I remedied my problem by using my Debit Card.

I went to Target and my NEW check w/ different account # got rejected.I wa shocked because I just got paid the day before and I knew I had more than enough to cover the sales amt. I was given a small receipt saying "it was due to information obtained from my Drier's Lic." And it listed my driver's lic. number on the slip. I was told to call Certegy. I paid with my debit card and the sale went thru with no hitch. So I did call Certegy, and they told me it was because I had checks forged. My question to them was how did they get hold of my Driver's license? Any way, they sent me forms that said "Affidavit of Forgery" which required me to have it notarized. On the form, thay wanted me to list my new acct number, my mother's maiden name, my SS# and signature. And that's when I went on line to look this Certegy up and find out how legit this company is. Needless to say, after reading all these complaints about this Certegy, I am not sending them any of my personal information. Dec. 19, 2009 I purchased a laptop on sale (their last one) at OFFICE MAX in Norman, OK. Let me explain I am several decades over 21 with a perfect credit history and plenty of cash in the bank... NEVER a bad check in my history EVER... however, CERTEGY refused my check! When I protested, the store mgr. called them back and got a real person on the phone for me to talk with. Their only reason for humiliating me in front of half a dozen people nearby in the store and forcing me to repeat my personal information 3 times was..... they had NO records on me !!!!!!!!! The CERTEGY rep said if I would write another check for the same amount, $909.26, she would make an adjustment so it would pass, but the original check would not. I complained forcibly and repeatedly that all they had to do was CALL MY BANK, which was local... only 10 mi. down the road. But both the Office Max store mgr. and CERTEGY refused to do so. After returning home at 2:00 pm I immediately called the corporate customer service # at Office Max, filed a complaint, and asked for immediate response via email. The customer service rep. was very nice, and assured me she would also be upset. However, there has been NO response from Office Max. Due to the fact my personal information was broadcast repeatedly over a very quiet store, I will be changing my bank account number, and I informed both the store and the CERTEGY rep that I will never again spend one dollar in any store which uses their service. Today,I attempted to make a purchase from Shoe Show in Columbus,GA. I was paying a layaway out and purchasing more shoes, but had to write two different checks since they were two different transactions. The first check went through the second was declined. The manager and I could not understand the logic of this. I told the manager I would go home and get my debit card and return to the store. On my way back home, I called Certegy. The automated machine asked several questions regarding the check and then advised that I do not have negative check writing priviledges but they are attempting to maintain the security of the merchant because I wrote two checks. After hearing this, I was ticked off, so I decided not to return to the store. As I read all of these complaints, I will be more leary of supporting any merchant that utilizes Certegy. From: Message Author (click here to email author)Date: Monday, 29-Dec-08 13:51:01 CST Business: Reply Online Consumer: Comment On This Comment On ThisI too went to K-mart. My total was just 108.00. The funds were in the account. I thought I forgot my debit card and the store closed in a half hr. I normally don't write checks except the rent. I asked do you take checks and she said yes. I signed the check and she ran it through. She then stated your transaction was denied. I said denied with a look on my face like what are you talking about. She said yes denied. I looked further and checked every pocket and my purse and found my debit card. She ran it and it worked fine. She told me to call the 800 number which led me to google it. One question though, why is a debit card good through Certegy check services and not a paper check under the same account. They both get drawn from the same checking account. Funds are both electronically taken from one account. So one would think if the check got declined why not the debit check card? That is my question for Certegy Check. If I was to make a purchase online with a check and it would electronically post as a debit as if i was to use my check debit card. So why is plastic better than paper? So as Check Certegy brings embarassment to consumers because as per the machine the paper check is not ok and the plastic check is, it is just more of a hassle for a consumer which causes less shopping hurting the economy more-go figure. Oh and by the way a debit card is not so different than the paper check Certegy, because if one wanted too bounce a check they can do it was a debit card. Not all transactions show up right away before you make that next purchase. So you better think twice about your system declining checks, because if you make it easier for a consumer to use a debit card and don't work out the kinks of your system always declining a paper check. Eventually Certegy will have no paper checks to decline due to the use of debit cards. By christmas of next yr who is to say that you all will still be here. So think twice about being the grinch and ruining the Christmas Cheer.. Merry Christmas to all who went through the same issue!!! also- My checks are in good standing I had the account for five yrs. They have never been declined before when they were used which isn't that often because the debit is easier. They are indeed "The Grinch That Stole Christmas from my Family." I received my payroll check today 12/23/08 via the snail mail. The clerk at the check-out, said, because my check was almost $800 that I need to go to the Money Services Desk at the Super WM. OK fine, just holds up the line, i thought. The lady at Money Services runs my paycheck through five times. Each time, I'm having to enter my SSN. You can bet I was extremely irate. Nobody has the right to stick his nose into my financial business and spending practices! I also used a debit card to cover the games I had purchased. I probably won't shop there again. I just examined the Certegy card given to me by a Game Stop employee, and it appears as though this company is phishing for your banking information. Hello, I wasn't born yesterday! Additionally, after researching the company on the web, I discovered that a former employee, William Sullivan, is paying a hefty sum to plaintiffs to settle a lawsuit against Fidelity/Certegy and is probably in jail right now. DO NOT CALL THEM OR GIVE THEM ANY OF YOUR PRIVATE OR BUSINESS FINANCIAL INFORMATION! They are not to be trusted. This was the first time I ever heard of Certegy, and I shop at Kohl's, Walmart, K-Mart and JC Penney the most. This seems like it should be illegal, but I suppose it is intended to help stop fraud by consumers and loss of profit to businesses. Additional information I learned: This is NOT a bank but is acting like some kind of financial institution. To "recover" the amount of a "bad" check, they use a program called "SettleSmart." The following comes directly from their site, http://www.retailsolutionsonline.com/product.mvc/Certegy-SettleSmart-0002: "For every merchant who has been waiting for a faster, easier way to handle returned checks, it's time to cash in. With SettleSmart from Certegy Check Services, all returned checks are received, reported, reconciled and collected from one centralized bank. From the point of sale to the day of reconciliation, you're free of bookkeeping hassles. Check fraud is reduced. Cash flow is controlled. Good customers get the respect they deserve. And, you can focus on what you do best: Earning more business. With no special equipment to buy, SettleSmart is easy to implement. And even easier to use. At the point of sale, you simply stamp or endorse the customer's check with instructions to the checkwriter's bank to return any unpaid items to a special account set up by Certegy as though it were the first bank of deposit. There's no interruption in customer service. No additional paperwork. And check authorization is performed through your existing point-of-sale equipment. I found out that the checking account number had been entered wrong and my bank would not accept it. I called Certegy and told them they entered the wrong number and they told me basically to shut up and color and that I still owed them the amount plus the $30.00. YEAH I DON'T THINK SO!!! Anyway...the phone co. accepted responsibility for the mix up (they were great about it and felt really bad). But Certegy still wanted that $30.00 fee. Knology called Certegy and got the $30.00 waived. But when I called Certegy to give them the correct account number; they ended up taking out the original amount 2Xs. So now I have 2xs the original amount taken out of my checking account. I called Certegy and they said that I would get my refund "when they processed the refunds" almost a month later! I cannot believe how Certegy thinks they can steal money out of my account and then reimburse me when they get around to it. I am almost considering some kind of legal action against them. I don’t want money, but I want them to realize they can’t kick people around because they think they are too big and important to be bothered with us little people’s petty complaints... This is the Resolution Request on the BBB complaint: I want my refund sent to me ASAP; as was promised on 13 Oct by the CSR/Supervisor (Matt). And I also want a letter of apology sent to me. When it came, I realized there was no way I was going to send them my SS number, my bank routing number, and a cancelled check. So I went online and discover they have a history of problems with security and identity theft! My current plan is to send letters of complaint to all the local Certegny merchants informing them I will no longer do business with them, together with a dollar estimate of what that lost business could mean (we own two businesses, have remodeled 4 houses and are planning to remodel a 5th). I have purchased eyeglasses from them several times in the past with checks with no problem. I couldn't believe what I was hearing when the clerk told me my check was not accepted. I had never had a check denied before. My FICO scores have been all in the 800+ range with a 20 year credit history, so this totally blew my mind. There was also approx. $2500.00 in the checking account, so after asking the clerk what the problem was several times and being told she had no idea...I called my bank (BofA). Again, the customer service rep also had no idea, but suggested I call Chex Sysems and gave me a number that was purely automated and no help at all. That evening, in a panic, I ran my credit scores with no changes...that was a small relief. I was afraid something had been put on there without my knowledge. After 24 hours of frustration, I went back to LensCrafters and asked the same clerk which company she had called. At this point, I think she felt sorry for me and gave me a comapany number for Certegy. I finally got to speak to a human being, however, the only responses she could give me were "often legitimate checks are denied because they do not fit into the patterns deemed acceptable"(upon furter questioning...she reported that she had no knowledge of the pattern or any details or reason why my check was denied.) The only positive piece of information I obtained was that the "reason" would be mailed to me. THANK YOU VERY MUCH CERTEGY FOR THE EYE-OPENING EXPERIENCE OF KNOWING THAT THERE IS BUT ANOTHER MONITORING SYSTEM TO THE DETRIMENT AND FRUSTRATION OF THE INNOCENT CONSUMER. I have been going to Wal-Mart to cash my checks for a few months now with no problems, then one day out of the blue I get denied and I am given this number to call to find out why. When I call they tell me they need more information from my employer in order to continue to cash my checks. There has been no previous problem with cashing my checks and I work for a very large employer so I asked them what they needed from my employeer that is different now than it was last time they cashed my check - they could not tell me and just suggested that I cash my check at the bank it was drawn on. Due to the problems with this company I will not go back to Wal-Mart for their check cashing service again. They could not tell me why my check was denied and also put me on the VIP list. What a crock of shit. This process took place at Home Depot, so you might want to avoid them in the future. It was very embarassing and I ended up paying with my debit card. Something needs to be done about practices such as this. I would also like to see what they use for deciding to deny a check. The Freedome of Information Act should require them to produce the methods used for denial of checks. Tom R.
