On February 13th 2005 I had the Firestone at 4719 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 do a pre-safety inspection checkout on my 1994 Nissan Sentra to determine what the vehicle would require to pass the state safety inspection and was informed that it would need new front pads because the “front brake pads are peeling away from backing plate”. Since the pads had been installed at Pep Boys and had a lifetime warranty I decided to let Pep Boys do the safety inspection and expected them to find the brake pads bad and that I would have them replaced for the price of the labor. On Friday March 4th, 2005 I left my 1994 Nissan Sentra at Pep Boys at 6100 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 to have both an emissions inspection and a safety inspection performed. About 1 hour later I received a call from Chris Scarborough, a service advisor at Pep Boys, who informed me that to pass the state safety inspection my vehicle would require new front rotors as the current pair were “below spec”, new front disc pads, two new front struts and a front end alignment and that these repairs together with the price of the inspections would cost $501.00. At first I told Chris to go ahead and make the repairs that were required for the safety inspection but several minutes later called him back and told him not to do the repairs and fail the vehicle. About 10 minutes later I received a second call from Chris who informed me that the vehicle would pass the safety inspection without any of the repairs that he had told me were required for the safety inspection. I informed Chris that two weeks previously I had been informed by Firestone that the brake pads were bad and was told that they were not bad and the reason he had told me I required them is that because they were going to put on new rotors I needed new pads. He also told me that to pass the safety inspection I did not need two new front struts and because I did not need new struts I did not need a front end alignment. An hour later a picked up the vehicle and paid for the emissions and safety inspections and no repairs what so ever. I then took the vehicle across the street to the National Tire & Battery store at 6051 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055 to have the tires rotated and the front end alignment checked. They rotated the tires and did a re-alignment and also did what they call a “Quick Check” where they look at safety issues such as tire and brake wear. This “Quick Check” revealed no problems. It is my opinion that Chris Scarborough, the service advisor at Pep Boys had every intention of ripping me off for $450.00 by telling me that the above mentioned repairs where required for the safety inspection when in fact they were not.
