While on vacation in Florida, I visited the Sports Authority in Boca Raton. I needed a new pair of sneakers and checked out models on the display wall. Several model were unattached and I was able to inspect and handle them without any difficulty. After examining about 4 pairs, I reached for a Nike pair that was attached to a retractable security cord. As I pulled the shoe towards me, the retractable security device pulled the shelf off of the wall and this lucite shelf struck me between the eyes creating a pucture and bleeding. The manager was helpful and retrieved some first aid supplies so that I can tend to the injury. An accident form was filed.

The Sports Authority contacted me through mail and stated that the corporation believes that all stores are safe.

I responded with a letter that they are a dangerous operation.

The Sports Authority's response was that they have investigated the display and found no apparent malfunctions. They offered a $100. gift certificate which I refused as I have no intentions of shopping in such an unsafe atmosphere. My concern is that they anchor their shelves on the wall to prevent this from occuring once more.The displays are dangerous and I could have been blinded had a stood a half inch closer left or right.

Had this happened to a mother holding an infant or young child in her arms and the child was struck by this display, all hell would have broke lose. The Sports Authority, by all means is a dangerous establishment, not concerned with customer safety, but an operation that is only concerned with it's price tags. \

This is my first step in teaching the Sports Authority a lesson in consumer safety. I had notified them of my intent to expose this matter as I am not satisfied with their game of denial.

I'll update this in the near future. In the mean time, if you consider visiting the Sports Authority, wear some eye wear or some army gear. I'd feel safer in Iraq.
