AT&T CallVantage and "Fax and Modem Support"

AT&T CallVantage is a totally digital, consumer, telephone service using the newer VoIP (Voice Over IP) technology. VoIP requires that the consumer have an existing, broadband, internet connection (e.g. DSL/T1/high-speed cable). Faxing (a purely analog technology) has been a challenge for the various VoIP providers. AT&T touts a feature known as "Fax and Modem Support". In their literature they state: ".. Fax and Modem Support:...works with all TAs [telephone adapters]... works with most commonly used fax machines as well as some other data services, including: fax machines, modems and personal video recorders (such as TiVo)" (see secure.callvantage.att.com/cvweb/basics/#datacomp) After have issues with following AT&T's documentation on this feature, I was told by three separate customer service representatives that their service only works with "some" fax machines and DOES NOT work with computer modems. So, faxing from my computer as I have always been able to do on my land line is NOT possible with AT&T Call Vantage. If faxing from a machine (fax or

computer) in your home or office is important to you, please take note. VoIP may not be the solution for you. What I take great exception to is AT&T's marketing approach. To be fair to its new and existing customers, AT&T's documentation should read: "Fax Support: This feature works with some stand-alone fax machines, the list of which we will not be providing to you." Further, my experience with AT&T CallVantage Customer Service on the whole was unsatisfactory. I called them on at least seven occasions about the above issue as well as another issue regarding a TWO WEEK long interruption in their "Locate Me" feature. Some of AT&T's customer service agents play that new "I have no supervisor here right now, but one will call you back" game; this inevitably ends the same way each time -- NO ONE calls back.
