Walmart, Benton, KY - does not process WIC accurately Walmart, Benton, KY - does not process WIC accurately
The Walmart store in Benton, KY cannot seem to process WIC checks accurately. I have been shopping at this Walmart since moving to Kentucky in 2003. My two year old daughter receives federal WIC (Women, Infants and Children) checks for lactose-free milk, upon prescription from her doctor. Once per month I go the the Benton Walmart to purchase her milk because no other nearby stores sell lactose-free products. Every single time I attempt to purchase lactose-free milk I am told that I have selected the wrong brand. Each month, I select the brand I was told to purchase the last month AND the brand that has a WIC sign displayed under the price tag. Last month, I held up the line for over 20 minutes while THREE different customer service representatives attempted to ring up my purchase of lactose-free milk. One CSR informed me that I needed to contact my local health department to have my checks changed!!! I informed her that the checks clearly state that whatever store accepting the checks is entitled to select the product of purchase (usually the lowest priced) but that they are obligated under federal law to sell me at least one brand of the item listed on the checks. I informed the CSR of my previous difficulties purchasing lactose-free milk on WIC checks at this store and why it was that I continued to attempt to do so. I also informed her of the WIC sign portrayed below the product I was attempting to purchase. She informed me that just because the WIC sign was there did not mean the product was WIC approved and that it was up to Walmart as a company to determine what items were available for purchase. It is very embarrassing to hold up a line full of people because the cashiers cannot accurately process one's payment. During the wait, I repeatedly asked the cashier to ring up the women in line behind me while we sorted out the mess, and was informed that she could not because she had "already messed up her system". The woman was extremely sympathetic to my plight. She overheard the entire conversation and informed me of a nearby grocery that I was not aware of that she believes sells lactose-free milk and accepts WIC. I will be shopping there in the future.
