No refund for medical condition

We recently reserved a car on Hotwire, we booked it within 48 hours. My parents were traveling from Denver to Houston, then renting a car to go from Houston to Galveston. They were set to fly out Thursday afternoon, pick up the car that afternoon. On Wednesday, my mother ended up going to the doctor for a pain in her chest. They did not admit her to the hospital that day, but did make an appointment for a heart catheterization on Friday.

So we called to cancel the reservation, understanding that a refund may not come without documentation from the doctor. So we get documentation that she was unable to fly and she was admitted to the hospital on Friday. Hotwire is now saying that they will not refund the money because the letter says she was unable to fly and this was for a car rental.

I do expect that they could surmize that if she is unable to fly she is unable to get to the destination to where she was supposed to rent the car?! I do understand non refundable, but she has documentation that she had a medical conditon and was admitted to the hospital?!

I have canceled my account and encoured other to do so as well.
