2002 Hyundai Sonata check engine light

2002 Hyundai Sonata purchased used from Bell Road Hyundai in Phoenix, Az. The check engine light has come on 3 times in less than 6 weeks. It has only occurred since it has gotten hot outside and I run the A/C. It is still covered under warranty. The first time I took it in, they gave it back saying it was fixed but did not tell me what was the problem or what they did to fix it. The second time, I was told that it was because the gas cap was not sealing and that it had been replaced the first time I took it in. Since it happened again I was told it was because I wasn’t screwing the cap on tight enough. I think I know how to put on a gas cap! I’ve been driving for over 30 years.

The service consultant “Bob” was very rude and told me that it was covered that time but if I brought it in again I would have to pay to have it diagnosed with the computer. I guess because I am a woman I don’t know what I’m talking about. The light has come on for a third time. My husband is taking it in on Monday. We’ll see if he is treated better. From the research I have done, it seems this is a common complaint with this car. I just want the problem fixed and I would like to be treated with a little more respect when dealing with the service department of Bell Road Hyundai.

Susan

I have a sonata that is also 2002 and it has the same problem. However it not hot here. The dealer keeps telling me it is the gas cap that is not tight enough as if I didn't know

how to tight a gas cap!!

Btw. I'm a man and they are treating me bad also.

it is the gas cap or the vent sens. on a canister .... the light is telling you the you are venting stuff out in are air .... thats it .... there is a seal that can go bad on a gas cap and there can be a nick on the filler neck that is letting stuff leak past ... or the sens. is bad .... but the tech it right .... all cars from 96 up have obd2 computers and they need this for for better air for us .... its a pain in the butt ... but its needed .... so get a new cap first then drive 500 miles if it still comes on its the canister sens. and its on the right side rear ... behide the tire
