Joe’s Crab Shack in Bellevue, KY

 

 


 

My family visited Joe’s Crab Shack in Bellevue, KY on June 28, 2005 around 4pm and spent more than $80. Unfortunately I was not along on this trip or I personally would have had word with someone in a higher authority than the 'manager' that visited the table. The attitude of this manager was completely unacceptable. My mother related to me that as she was dividing up the cheese sticks appetizer for the children, a bug ran out from under the food and onto the table. My mother squished the bug with her finger and wiped it on the napkin.

 

Their waitress was standing at the table and witnessed all of this and immediately said she would inform the manager. My family did not request any specific action; I can only imagine the waitress realized the gravity of the situation and thought the manager could be of more help. Unfortunately, she was wrong. If anything the manager only made it worse. As both my Aunt and myself work within the restaurant business, we are aware that there are always problems with controlling insects. Although having a live bug delivered on a plate is close to the worst scenario possible - we can consider it a forgivable incident, provided the staff is adequately apologetic.

 

However, my mother says a lady with short dark hair that presented herself as the manager came out to the table and said, “I understand you all had a bug.” My mother said, “Yes, a small one, it’s here on the napkin” The lady took the napkin and said, "We will look at this under the microscope in the back." That is all! Not even an Apology! And what a preposterous thought that there is a microscope kept in the back! We all understood the comment to be one that basically accused my family of lying about the insect. Which makes no sense because the waitress witnessed the event. To top it off, nothing else was done.

 

The 'manager' never came back, no discounts were taken from the bill, no replacement cheese sticks - nothing! My brother and sister-in-law go to visit family in South Carolina and had recommended this chain of restaurants as being very good. They patronize the place often while visiting. My mother told me the food was excellent, if you can get pass the bugs. I however, have vowed I will never visit this restaurant - based solely on the attitude of the manager.
