Hollywood Video 8915 S. Stony Island Chicago, IL Credit Protection 13355 Noel Rd 21st FL Dallas, TX 75240 Dear Complaints.com In late 2003, we received a credit threat from Credit Protection on behalf of Hollywood Video over an amount of $70. This was a complete surprise. A movie we had rented and returned months prior was supposedly not in it's case (we have no prior history of this) and thus never returned. We had no way of knowing about the problem since Hollywood Video had an old address nor did we receive a call. The $70 was the amount they charged for late fees, etc. My wife and I contacted Hollywood Video, Daly City, CA and, although we skeptical about the fault missing item, we negotiated the amount of no less than $40 given that Hollywood Video had an old address. The Hollywood Video Store said that we would receive no more collection letters. After this, we received another letter from Credit Protection on behalf of Hollywood Video again threatening to harm my credit with a report of the item. I sent them a letter explaining that the matter was settled in full with Hollywood Video and provided the name of the store manager with his phone number. I received a reply from Credit Protection apologizing for the inconvenience and acknowledging the matter to be satisfactorily settled and case closed. Today, July 03, 2005, I happened to view my TransUnion Report where at the top is one lone and blaring "Adverse Account" which goes on to describe this same $70, Credit Protection and Hollywood Video. It shows the amount as a "collection account" and "past due." The item will not be removed until 10/2009! Based on my experience, Hollywood Video and its collection agency Credit Protection have behaved recklessly with a customer's personal information. They essentially forced us to say we were at fault by placing a credit gun to our heads. And even after we reached an agreement, they pulled the trigger. I wonder what the value of their harm has been to my credit? It's possible I could have owned all of the movies I ever rented from them for the price. Hollywood Video abused my personal information in order to collect a paltry sum. I have never been back to Hollywood Video and would advise anyone else to do the same. Now there are several more years before my Hollywood Video credit smear is removed from my otherwise flawless credit report. I wished I'd never done business with Hollywood Video. Yes, you paid, but it was still past due, so it would still show up on your credit. Also, it is your responsibility to update your address/phone number with a company... how can they know that your address changed unless you tell them?
