Carrier Central Air Conditioner Carrier Central Air Conditioner
Following is the letter that I sent to Carrier regarding the poor performance of my AC unit. I received a prompt response from Joanne Hertel, Manager of Customer Care at Carrier who told me that my unit was out of warranty and that she was sorry that their product did not meet my expectations. I cannot believe this is a multi-million dollar corporation. June 26, 2005 Geraud Darnis President Carrier World Headquarters One Carrier Place Farmington, CT 06034-4015 Dear Mr. Darnis, In your message posted on the Carrier website, you say that Willis Carrier provided more than the technology as a foundation for your corporate success, but also the drive to satisfy customers. Your letter continues by telling us that one hundred years later, these same attributes resonate in the 42,000 dedicated Carrier associates that span the globe. Mr. Darnis, I hope that you really mean what you said in that letter, as my experience with Carrier, its distributors and installers thus far has not been consistent with the commitment you boast. July 2002 On 7/19/02, after significant trouble year after year with my 10-year old Carrier central air conditioner unit, I contracted with a reputable, licensed contractor to install a new, comparable Carrier condenser at my residence. Since I am not the original owner of my home, I assumed the trouble that I continually experienced with my previous Carrier had much to do with the previous owners care for it and chose to install Carrier as a replacement. I was familiar with the reputation of both your products and your company and considered nothing else. I spent just under $1,700 for this unit with installation, immediately after spending $300 to attempt to have the previous Carrier fixed. September 2002 My family used the air conditioner for six weeks or so, without incident, before turning it off for the season in September 2002. June / July 2003 When I turned the Carrier on in June of 2003 it worked fine until 7/7/03 when the unit iced up and failed to cool. Since I was within the first year, this service call was covered under warranty and the technician found the unit to be 1 lb. low on R-22 due to the caps at the condenser being loose. He tightened the caps and added the R-22 and the unit operated properly for the remainder of the summer June / July / August / September 2004 When I turned the Carrier on in June of 2004 it again worked fine for a few weeks. But, when the big heat of summer hit on 6/30/04, less than a year after the previous service call, the unit again iced up and failed to cool. The technician came out again and found the unit to be clean with no traces of oil, which would have been indicative of a leak. The pressure in the unit was found to be slightly low and the technician replaced two schrader cores and leak-locked the valve caps. When the technician left the unit was operating properly. This fix lasted two weeks when on 7/13/04 the unit iced up and failed to cool again. The technician found the unit to be 1 pound low on R-22 again, this time as a result of a leak in the side service valve. The technician leak-tested the entire system at this time, as had been done when it was installed, and found the coil and lineset to hold 200 PSI for 5 From: Message Author (click here to email author)Date: Saturday, 30-Jul-05 00:00:00 CDT Business: Reply Online Consumer: Comment On This Comment On ThisOur Carrier system failed after 6 years.
