On the evening of January 28th, 2005, a young man came to the door of my apartment. I did not know him, and I live in a complex that does not allow soliciting, so I did not answer the door. The following evening, I was approached as I was walking toward the stair well of my building by the same young man. He asked how I was doing. I said fine.

When he began telling me about what he was selling, I said "No thanks, I'm not interested". He said, "What?" I repeated myself and began walking upstairs. He replied in a very sharp tone:" Oh, it's because I'm black, huh?" It's upsetting that someone who is out asking for people to help him would be so disrespectful, selfish, and rude.
