Earthlink Please Cancel My Service

EarthLink I would like to lodge a complaint against the internet provider EarthLink. I am trying to cancel my account but you have made it nearly impossible.

First, I can't cancel my account via the internet for security reasons. I'm not sure I follow your logic here - you accepted my credit card details via the internet with no security problems, you charged me monthly without ever speaking to me with no security problems but now, when I want you to stop charging my credit card there are security concerns?

Since I can't cancel via the internet I would like to call and cancel my service - but wait - your customer service is not open during evenings. So those of us that have jobs need to find time to sit on hold waiting for someone to help us. Yippee!

So I finally have a chance to make a phone call. After going through 37 prompts I finally get to a live person and what do I hear? "Our system is experiencing an upgrade, please call back in 2 hours!" What???? During your customer service open hours you are doing an upgrade?

I have to say - it is a very neat trick. If you make it hard to cancel service then you might eek out a few more dollars. However, while the earthlink service did not meet my needs (you did not offer high-speed access in my area for a reasonable price), I had nothing but positive things to say. Now, I would warn any consumer to stay away from Earthlink now because you will never be able to leave.

All I really want is for someone to please cancel my service and please stop charging me for something I can't use. Hopefully this will get resolved when I get another live person on the phone.
