---------------------------------
Basically the story is this. I went in the mall because I got $20 from dad, who was nice enough that day to let me have some I was gonna eat a nice meal at an oriental stop at College Square Mall. Then go over an buy a good game. Instead I walked by the clearance table at Candles & More, which was out in the main walk way. (with a food court in the middle. ) It was busy that day too. Anyway, I saw a candle that looked like Vanilla and was going to pick it up.
Unfortunately since it was a busy walkway, someone walked by behind me just enough to make me bump the table. So of course the candle looked like it was going to fall so I made a grab for it. Unfortunately again it had a defective lid and the candle slipped on out. I tried in vain to save it but alas it made it to the floor. Embarassed I simply asked " do I have to pay for this" which came the reply similar to obviously.
Well I'd never been to a store where a store makes a person pay for an item that breaks via an accident. Be it at Sears, Walmart, Kmart. Usually (and I've seen this happen) the first question a store clerk says is are you alright. Asks for my safety. Unfortunately twas not the case here. And the lady there continued (and continues to ) insinuate that I intentionally did it. (see below my response and even farther down her original response.... ) Needless to say. I simply asked for a refund thru the bbb.org to repair my disappointment. And got back a bunch of false accusations. :( before her response... I wasn't sure about the con artist label. But that's what I was told it was. It had all the classic clues. On the end of a table, defective lid. Now that I have her response and it's filled with lies... I'm now totally aware that it is a con artist technique. and am very offended in being called irresponsible when in fact that's the whole reason I filed a complaint with you. Because I was being responsible and certainly wouldn't like to see this happen to anyone else. It was that store's responsibility to tape up a defective lid. They didn't and it would seem I'm stuck. Normally I'd send something like this off to the CPSC, considering that anyone could be injured by such a product, but I don't consider this a Yankee Candle problem. It was probably a store display or an item that had been highly used since it's almost impossible to easily take off a Yankee Candle lid. Which is why you pay $17 for their candles. A shoddy lid I'd expect to see for $1. And indeed I've seen them. But not Yankee Candles. They are pure quality. I've sent them a nicer email asking perhaps for a different scent. Whatever happens there I won't be irritated at them. It's not their fault. ---------------------------------------------- there's actually numerous falsities here standing totally alone false (was extremely crowded in the walk way and several people were at the table) he picked it up and proceeded to drop it. false (didn't have a chance to pick it up) Repeatly saying do I have to pay for it false (said it once) Sign Posted in front of him False (not in front of me... otherwise I wouldn't have asked do I have to pay for it) Bet it was taped along the trim of the table. In which case since people where in front of it, I wouldn't have seen anyway) still he chose to pick it up (well I was gonna pick it up but was forced to grab it instead so it wouldn't break.) ------------------------------------------- Candles & More's response HE WAS STANDING AT THE TABLE TOTALLY ALONE-CANDLES WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF TABLE HE PICKED IT UP AND PROCEDED TO DROP IT. REPEATLY SAYING DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR IT I HAVE NO MONEY...SIGN POSTED IN FRONT OF HIM YOU BREAK IT YOU BUY AND STILL HE CHOOSE TO PICK IT UP..I RESENT BEING ACCUSED OF CON ARTIST TECHNIQUE, AND HAVE NO DESIRE TO RESOLVE ISSUE WITH HIM. I AM DISAPPOINTED TO MEET SUCH AN IRRESPONSIBLE ADULT. That is probably the craziest thing I have ever heard..then again I was in a similiar situation once..I was looking at a display table and made the mistake of picking up a small candle and sniffed it to see what the scent was since the label had been torn off..it did not smell good so I set it back down...I turned to walk away and a Woman tried to scoot between me and the table just as she was about to clear the table her hip brushed the table and knocked a jar off the table breaking it..we both looked down at it, but because I was seen looking at the display items I was accused and that Woman refused to come clean coz the cost for the jar was nearly $18..when the employee came out and asked if I was going to pay for the jar? (I'm still not sure what was in it) I said no I didn't break it..in the meantime the woman who did break it boot scooted out of there..Mall security was called on me, thank God a small boy stepped forward and told the truth..I was told I could go..I thanked the little boy for being honest and left..Why don't I believe the employees version on this complaint? coz the store employee in my case tried to swear she saw me pick up the jar and drop it on the floor..my guess is if they don't find someone to pay for the broken item then the price comes out of their own paycheck..
