Last week I purchased from your Manchester, CT store the following: A Gateway model 816GM desktop and a HP model ZV5430 notebook. Unfortunately I opened the carton for the HP notebook to find through a current add that Comp-USA was advertising a similar HP higher end model # ZV5460. The most notable difference is the RAM. The HP ZV5460 doubles the RAM of the HP ZV5430 from 512MB to 1024MB.
Price-wise I would be paying the same for the higher end HP ZV5460 after the rebates offered by Comp-USA ($150 Comp-USA + $50 HP). Circuit City does not offer any additional rebates other than the $50 HP. Since I only purchased the notebook a few days earlier and did not get a chance to use it other than opening the carton, I asked the store manager if they will refund my money or at least match the Comp-USA offer. She said there would be no problem returning, however there is a 15% re-stocking charge (about $200 on a $1350 item) which is absurd. As far as an exchange for the HP ZV5460 model the manager informed me that this would be impossible since Circuit City does not carry this item.
I then asked is there any way that you can make me happy in order that I can feel I am getting the same value as the Comp-USA offering. I suggested that I would be satisfied if Circuit City would offer a memory upgrade comparable to the HP ZV5460. I even suggested that I can do the memory installation myself. Again I was denied, reason given that the two notebooks are different model numbers. I cannot understand this reasoning and I was always under the impression that Circuit City strives to make their customers happy.
Not too long ago I purchased a 57" Sony projection TV, a notebook for my son a a Sirius Satellite radio at Circuit City. My wife and I both have Circuit City charges and between both of us we have made several large purchases. I would think that I would be accommodated a little nicer as a valued customer, but was treated very poorly. I informed your store manager that she just lost me as a customer and I will cease to shop at Circuit City again.
