American Express - American Express Travellers Checks - Unable to Cash Them

Product: Travellers Checks

Company: American Express

Category: Business, Finances

As someone who has been traveling extensively, both for business and personal travel, and has been using American Express Travellers Checks for many years, I have finally been stumped. On July 20, 2005 I tried in vain to cash 60.00 worth of these checks in Hastings, Nebraska, and after visiting three banks and two retailers, found that the Travellers checks were not usable. Two of the banks I visited, Hastings State and Five Points, were vendors of American Express Travellers Checks, but were unable

to cash them for someone who did not have an account with the bank. I was told to return to my own bank to cash the checks, however, being over 1800 miles from my own bank made this task impossible. While all vendors involved were sympathetic to my situation, they were unable to help, as policy prevented them from actually doing something. My question is...why on earth would someone buy Travelers checks as security while traveling, when they can only be cashed at the business they were

purchased from? While traveling throughout Oregon, California, Louisiana, Nevada, South Dakota, and even Canada and Europe, I had no trouble at all using Amex Travelers Checks, but found that they are definitely not universally accepted. Has anyone found an alternative to carrying cash that would allow for a commonly accepted form of legal tender, other than credit cards, which I disavow because of their exorbitant interest rates? Most definitely I will never purchase Amex Travellers Checks again as I don't

need the embarrassment of being caught short of money, but still am hesitant to carry large amounts of cash. Tim

I have been an AE member for over 25yrs. I spend a lot of time in Mexico and previously used the AE office for cash advances. and personal ck. cashing. AE in mexico no longer offers that service. Recently in NYC i cashed $500 in tv cks but only with a great deal of difficulty. This was a Chase bank from whom I purchased the cks, only in another city, and where I had an account for many years. It is becoming difficult to cash the tv cks at banks in Mexico.

what is going on with AE
