GE Smart Water Softener (model# GXSF39E) - no soft water

August 15, 2005

I bought this one two years ago from Home Depot and installed it myself.

It worked fine until now, it suddenly stops generating soft water with high water level in the tank. I had gone through the manual reading every single page and did almost everything it suggested (cleaning the nozzle and venturi, check drain hose ...) I got nothing but frustration.

I did not want to call service because I know they are going to charge me at least $300 or more to repair (consider a machine that cost $500), that is too much. I tempted to throw the whole thing away and replace with another brand.

Fortunately, I found a couple of complains with similar GE unit from this site suggesting that the rotor and disc might have worn out. I am going to try this next. Morelikely that is the case since it is a very simple machine. I am very disappointing that GE did not include this check in the manual. Fine, if they make a cheap machine, just show me where to look for problem when things failed.

I just want to warn anyone who might be considered a purchase of GE Smart Water Softener. Just don't do it. Not worth your money. I guess they called it "smart" because it breaks down right at the end of the warranty period. I expected these machine to last 5-10 years at least. I won't be buying another GE brand ever again. They cannot screw me a second time.

From a very angry GE customer.
