Rental Car / Hertz UK Rental Car / Hertz UK
I rented a car from Hertz via Hotwire.com for $187.54 US. Rental record # 24/205ssss. This was the cheapest car available at $22.95 per day (not including taxes or insurance). When I arrived on March 17 to pick up my car, I was told I could upgrade to their "premier" line for an additional 3 pounds per day as I was a Hertz #1 customer.
As I work for a non-profit that provides charity to the poor I was about to decline when I asked if the car had a GPS. It did. I took the upgrade as it seemed worth it not to get lost all over Britain for a mere 3 pounds per day. I would probably save that much in gas.
I returned a day early and decided to drop off the car to avoid an extra day's rental. The clerk accidentally billed me for the full 5 days instead of 4 days which I pointed out to her. She apologized and corrected the bill. She told me my new total would be 488.50 pounds. I laughed and said "you mean dollars." No, she meant pounds.
After rechecking the bill in another computer, she confirmed that my original $187.54 reservation was now 488.50 pounds or $955.67 US (more than my travel costs from the US to Italy to Romania to Turkey and back). I spoke to the manager and he said he couldn't do anything because I had initialed the rate. The five day rate I had initialed as 593.16. Important to note it had no notation of currency on the amount. No pounds, no dollars.
Since my reservation was made in US dollars and this was only a 3 pound per day upgrade, it seemed to make sense at the time that the new total was $593.16 US after I had upgraded, added full insurance and pre-paid the fuel charge (although in hindsight this is still too high).
Since then I have sent two emails to Hertz UK Customer Service and have only received the standard automated response.
I would consider the matter resolved to my satisfaction if Hertz UK credited the difference between $955.67US and $593.16US or $362.51.
