On September 5, 2004 my husband and myself went to Mattress Discounters store at 12260 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland to purchase a mattress. Upon entering the premise we noticed one salesman looking our way as we approached the door but quickly turned away when we walked inside and did not speak or ask to assist us. We looked at several mattresses. In fact, we walked the entire store and not one salesperson came over to help us. We even walked past two white salesmen who were sitting on a bed talking. They looked at us but say anything. After a while we noticed a white couple that had just walked in the store and immediately a salesman greeted them. I walked over to a salesman and asked him who was the manager of the store and why didn't a salesman come over to assist us. I then walked over to the manager who was still greeting the white couple that walked into the store. I spoke to him explaining what had happened. He asked me to lower my voice and said that the salesmen assist customers on a rotating basis.

If this was correct where was the salesman that was suppose to assist us and why didn’t one salesperson in the store offered to help a couple who was clearly unattended by a salesperson. I counted at least four salesmen not doing anything but talking until that white couple walked in and one of them got up to greet them at the door.

Frustrated and upset by this unfair treatment, I told the manager that I was taking my business elsewhere and that I was going to report their store for discrimination and walked out. We walked over to the Mattress Warehouse down the street and were immediately greeted at the door. The Mattress Warehouse manager said that many people of color have complained of similar treatment at that Mattress Discounters. This must stop!
