Jeep Wrangler (2000) While recently driving in the middle of nowhere, my 2000 Wrangler with a six cylinder engine just quit. After about 500.00 of expenses to repair, I was informed that the problem I encountered is quite normal for the six cylinder engine. It appears that the poorly designed cam position sensor drive (in the older engine it was called a distributor) froze up causing three of the gear teeth that mesh with the camshaft gear to break off.
The drive no longer would turn thus no longer could send a signal to the computer that the engine was turning. This unit has 70000 easy miles on it with oil and filter changes done every 4000 miles. I have never heard of a distributor housing and shaft freezing up at such a low mileage and I cannot believe that this part would have failed so soon or ever.
The local dealer here in Phoenix says that this is a normal problem with the six cylinder engine an the Jeep people have not provided any relief except to keep the part in stock so you can buy it when you need it. Being that you never know when this part will fail, I would reccommend that you carry a spare if you go on any long trips or get rid of the vehicle altogether.
